80's Throwback

Firstly, many thanks to everybody who left messages after my last entry. Everything went well in the hospital and today the little one was back at school. No more hospital stuff until March which is a relief. Who said that April is the cruellest month? 'Fraid it's January in my house...

Sad to report that Butterfly is still languishing unfinished. I did pick up the stitches for the collar but wasn't happy with the appearance. The stitches are picked up with the right side facing and then the collar lies flat with the picked up stitches showing. I'm going to give it a go the other way around with the picked up stitches lying underneath the collar but I think it's definitely a job to do in daylight. Oh, and I'm using my 5mm circular needle for a quick hat for the husband....

All of which is a roundabout way of saying I cast on for something else! I received a copy of Rebecca 29 from Get Knitted and it's full of fun things for the summer. There was an interesting design called the Batwing sweater which has an intriguing construction. Basically, it's knittted from the middle of the front (or back) outwards to the edges on a circular needle. Clear as mud? Here's a picture of what I've worked up so far. It's fun to do...

I'm using some Twilleys Freedom Cotton in a very jolly shade of red.

I'm a little concerned about the 'batwing' element of this sweater. The first jumper I ever knitted for myself was a batwing design. It was from a pattern in my Mum's Womens Weekly - the knitting started at one cuff and then increased and increased right across the body, divided for the neck and then joined together for the opposite sleeve. I carried it everywhere for an entire summer and was completely obsessed with knitting it (no change there, then). I think I was probably twelve years old at the time. Did I finish it? I seem to think so although I can honestly never remember wearing it. Hmmm - hope that's not setting a precedent.....

Added later

Managed to get a picture of the sweater from the Rebecca magazine:

that sweater is looking good! i wish the model would put down her arms, though, so we could see batwing element more clearly!

your red yarn reminds me that i haven't touched my red cardigan from textured knits in over a month ...

That sweater design is awesome! There are a lot of sweaters in Rebecca 29 that I've seen that look good, but I'm waiting for a store in the US to stock it.
