Swirling Sun Hat

swirling close up.JPG

Pattern: Swirling Sun Hat by Lucy Neatby
Yarn: Debbie Bliss Cathay
Needles: 3.75mm (but finished off with 3.5mm as I broke the 3.75mm circular...)

I think I'm not alone in finding the Cathay splitty to work with. Also this design makes great use of "YO" (or rather "O" to use Lucy Neatby's knitting language) which probably isn't the best showcase for a occasionally splitty yarn. Here's a picture of the whole thing. My somewhat limited camera skills were defeated by the attempt to get a good picture of it on someone's head.

The Cathay is lovely and soft which is what I wanted but I'd definitely go for something a bit sturdier such as Rowan Handknit DK Cotton (which is the specified yarn) if I knit this again. Anyway, the BB now has a cherry red hat for cherry red days. Which is good. I have a mad urge to knit a daisy version of this - perhaps a green lace edging then white swirls, ending up with a yellow centre.

Thank you for all the 'Happy Birthday' messages - we had a lovely day here, too windy to go to the beach which was the original plan but we had a great time ending up with a party tea and watching Harry Potter with the audio description on (tip for knitters: the audio description is fantastic if you've got something fiddly on the needles). Happy days.

I've been thinking about this hat for a while - I like your daisy idea As I'm not in my first flush of youth, I wonder how it would look on me......

Your photo skills are great! The hat is adorable and the FBS too. I love the saturated color. Now that I've caught up with your projects I have added you to my bloglines list. For some reason you weren't there. That's why I missed so many FOs!

Beautiful! Great colour and pattern, aren't Lucy Neatby's patterns interesting? I also find the cathay a bit splitty, but I like the feel of it as I'm knitting, very soft.

Harry Potter and knitting... Sounds heavenly. I am knitting with the Cathay at the moment (the fiery bolero from Interweave) and I am not finding the splitting too bad. Although there is a lack of YO's in my project so that could be why. I love the drape and shape of the yarn though - I am using the black but think I may need some duck egg blue too... A. x

What a cheery cherry hat! So lovely! I also tried to leave a comment on your gorgeous FBS - it was amazing! I am sure your sister loved it!!

PS: What is "audio description" on a movie? Is that on a DVD? I don't know that I've ever seen that feature before and it sounds great for when working with Lace or something like that!
