12th June tropo

Nice tropo duct to Italy last night. Surprising because there was no prediction of it by Hepburn at all, I have usually found the tropo forecast quite reliable but maybe I only look for tropo when Hepburn forecasts it!

I must try flying this path on Google Earth, surely there are mountains in the way.

As previously when this path opens signals dont break into the Mediterranean area, even though there is excellent tropo there too at this time. I did try with I8MPO for several minutes and continuous weak signals were heard but it's hard to say what the propagation mode was for this.

Still low power here (about 200W) due to tube failure, antenna 2x16ele.

Hello Tim

Very interested in your comments about the Italian opening. We operated the IARU September contest, sometime in 1979, from just down the road at Landewednack near Lizard Point, and experienced a similar opening, from memory working a couple of dozen stations in I4 (and 5, I think). I have vivid memories of being called, as the CW op on duty, and running over a field which was well splattered with the products of herd of bullocks who'd occupied it a couple of days before. Serendipitously, I managed to avoid any contact! 73 Chris GW4DGU

Hi Chris,

Nice to hear from you.

It is a very interesting path and it opened once before for me from here on 17/11/2004, with mostly the same stations worked, I remember it well because Dave RAU was also qrv that night and I recall he was receiving I2FAK much better than me that night too.

Last week, Franco was nothing like as strong here as IW2DAL (although I know I2FAK has lost his big array in the meantime). I guess it could just be the difference in the duct but it occurred to me that it could also be that there is a good knife-edge for me to IW2DAL, and a good knife edge to Dave from I2FAK!

I am assuming it was a knife edge diffraction btw, but maybe there was just a duct right over the top of the Alps!

Great to hear IZ4BEH, a tropo ODX in that direction, still never managed to lauch a signal from here into the tropo duct over the Med though :-(

Cheers,

Tim.
